License Renewal Information
If you were licensedPRIOR TO January 1, 2020, the CE cycle began May 1, 2020 and will run through April 30th,2022. If you were licensedAFTERJanuary 1, 2020, the CE cycle begins from the date you were licensed and you will need to renew every 2 years from that date on your license. On January 1, 2022, anew law relating to Fair Housing in Rhode Island took effect. Primary licensees in RI will be required to complete a minimum of three CORE hours of approved continuing education about federal, or RI fair housing laws or treatment of individuals with disabilities as part of license renewal.What does this mean for RI Licensees?As part of your renewal requirements, 24 hours of continuing education credit now need a minimum of9 hours designated as CORE, and at least 3 of those need to include fair housing laws. If you hold a RI reciprocal license, OR, are grandfathered in for CEs you do not need to take any CEs including Fair Housing.

Broker Licensing & Classes
In Rhode Island, to obtain a brokers license you need to be licensed for a minimum of 2 years, and obtain broker-specific approved courses adding up to a minimum of 90 hours prior to taking a broker examination. RI REALTORS® has a robust program with over 90 courses that are approved to fulfill this requirement including the broker pre-license course. Courses are offered on an ongoing basis.

All Rhode Island real estate professionals are licensed by the Department of Business Regulation (DBR). The requirements for earning a real estate license are as follows:
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Must complete a minimum of 45 hours of Sales Pre-license training
- Must complete a 3-hour Lead Paint Hazards/Awareness Course
- Must complete 3 hours of Agency Law training
- Must pass the state licensing exam
- Upon successfully passing the examination, candidates must submit a criminal history record to the R.I. Department of Business Regulation.
- Pass a criminal background check.

Licensing in RI is through the Department of Business Regulations. A two-page application signed by the applicant and broker where you will hang your real estate license is required along with your class certificates, passing exam results, Criminal History Record, Certificate of Errors & Omissions Insurance, and application fees. A licensed salesperson is a real estate professional who has taken and passed all required real estate classes, has met the state requirements and passed the real estate licensing exam. It is the most encompassing of the titles since it is the starting point for real estate professionals in Rhode Island.
A REALTOR® is a real estate licensee who is a member of the National Association of Realtors. To become a member, a real estate licensee has joined a local board of realtors and has agreed to abide by the association's standards and uphold the code of ethics.
A real estate broker has met the state requirements and has passed the real estate brokers exam. Real estate brokers can work as independent real estate licensees or have other licensees working for them.
The biggest distinction between the three is that a broker can work on his or her own, while a salesperson or REALTOR® must work under a licensed broker to hold an active license with the state.
If you were licensed prior to January 1, 2020, the next license renewal deadline is April 30, 2022. To renew your license, you must obtain 24 continuing education (CE) hours (of which 9 are CORE) between May 1st, 2020 and April 30th, 2022. If you were licensed after January 1, 2020, you must complete your CE and renew prior to the 2-year anniversary date of your license.
NEW as of January 1st, 2022, included in your 24 hours, a minimum of 3 CORE hours need to be in, Rhode Island or local fair housing laws or treatment of any individuals in a protected class as designated in the Rhode Island Fair Housing Practices Act, R.I. Gen. Laws Chapter 34-37.

Licensing is through the RI Department of Business Regulations. You can find the Salesperson or Broker reciprocal application at Rhode Island Department of Business Regulation: (ri.gov)
If your primary license is in a state with RI reciprocity, you will need to complete 3 hours of Lead Paint Hazards/Lead Paint Mitigation.
If your primary license is in Florida, you will also need to sit for the state law exam. Please refer to the DBR website for more information.
Yes. Anyone can take courses for CE with RI REALTORS®. Non-member rates vary depending on courses. Create an account or log in as a non-member.
